The Founding of Shoreikan Dojo (2001)
Shoreikan Dojo (尚礼館道場) was established in 2001 by Tony Chung Sensei and Lai Hon Meng Sensei. Driven by a dedication to the clear, structured methodology of Yoshinkan Aikido, they founded the dojo to provide a disciplined, ego-free training environment where teens and adults of all backgrounds could build practical self-defense and mental resilience.
What "Shoreikan" Means (尚礼館)
The name Shoreikan translates to the "Hall of Honoring Courtesy and Etiquette" (尚 - Respect/Honor, 礼 - Etiquette/Courtesy, 館 - Training Hall). In traditional Japanese Budo, training begins and ends with mutual respect. While techniques are martially decisive and powerful, the ultimate goal is composure, self-control, and character development.
Direct Japanese Lineage & Tokyo Honbu Standards
Yoshinkan Aikido is celebrated worldwide for its systematic pedagogy, developed by Gozo Shioda (Kancho). Shioda's methods were so structured and martially effective that Yoshinkan was chosen as the mandatory martial art for the Tokyo Metropolitan Riot Police and the female police academy.
Shoreikan Dojo preserves these exact standards in Malaysia. Students are trained using the six central basic movements (Kihon Dosa) and the 150 core techniques (Kihon Waza), ensuring every practitioner develops solid balance, explosive center-line power (Chushin-ryoku), and safe breakfall ability.

Tony Chung Sensei began training Yoshinkan Aikido in 1997 and earned his Shodan (1st Dan) in 2000. In 2001, he co-founded Shoreikan Dojo alongside Lai Hon Meng Sensei, establishing one of Malaysia's longest-running dedicated Yoshinkan training centers.
Sensei underwent rigorous testing at the Yoshinkan Honbu Dojo in Tokyo, Japan, passing instructor examinations directly under master pioneers Inoue Kyoichi Hanshi and Tsutomu Chida Dojocho. Today, as a 6th Dan instructor, he provides direct, personal guidance for all new students.
