About Shoreikan Dojo

Shoreikan Dojo was founded in 2001 by Tony Chung Sensei to teach authentic Yoshinkan Aikido in Kuala Lumpur. As a pure martial art of balance and biomechanics, Aikido emphasizes minimal effort for maximum impact, making it effective for practitioners of all ages and physical builds.

Our structured pedagogical syllabus stems directly from Gozo Shioda Kancho, foremost student of Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba. Yoshinkan was pioneered in Malaysia by the late Thamby Rajah Sensei.

Beyond practical self-defense, training develops upright spinal alignment, joint flexibility, core balance, and calm mental focus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for new and prospective students

I am in my 40s, 50s, or 60s and haven't exercised in years. Is this safe for me?

Yes, absolutely. Yoshinkan Aikido is practiced cooperatively and relies on center-line leverage rather than brute muscular force. You will never be forced to take high breakfalls. Training focuses on posture alignment, joint mobility, balance, and core stability at your own comfortable pace.

I have zero martial arts experience. How do I start?

Every beginner starts from step one. We teach foundational posture (Kamae), the 6 basic movements (Kihon Dosa), and progressive safe rolling on soft tatami mats before you practice partner techniques.

What should I wear to my first Saturday trial session?

Wear comfortable workout attire, such as a clean T-shirt and track pants. Training is done barefoot on the tatami mats. You do not need to buy a formal uniform (Dogi) until you decide to register regularly.

How does monthly tuition work?

Tuition is RM150 per month with zero contracts and no lock-in periods. Your first Saturday morning trial class is completely free.

Why is training held on Saturday mornings only?

Holding our class exclusively on Saturday mornings (9:00 AM – 10:00 AM) allows us to consolidate all students and senior instructors into a single, high-quality session with focused, personalized guidance on the mat.

What is the age requirement?

Our Saturday morning class welcomes teenagers (ages 13+) and adults of all ages and fitness levels.
