There are two major styles of Aikido: Aikikai, the main organization of Aikido founded by Morihei Ueshiba, and Yoshinkan Aikido, founded by Ueshiba’s student Gozo Shioda.

In this blog post, we will take a look at some of the similarities and differences between these two styles of Aikido.

Similarities

Both Yoshinkan and Aikikai Aikido place an emphasis on proper form and technique. Both styles also seek to teach practitioners how to control their opponents using minimal effort. They are both fundamentally the same martial art.

Differences

The main difference between Yoshinkan and Aikikai Aikido is the emphasis that each style places on different aspects of the art. For example, Yoshinkan Aikido places more emphasis on rigidity and orderliness, while Aikikai allows for more fluidity.

Some technique names are also different, but the application of the technique is the same. There are also some varieties in the method of execution, you’ll realize that it’s one and the same when you progress through the ranks.

Conclusion

Which style of Aikido is right for you? That depends on your goals and preferences.

If you are looking for a style that emphasizes proper form and technique, then Yoshinkan Aikido would be more suitable for you. However, if you just want to learn Aikido with more “freedom” then Aikikai may be the better choice.

Ultimately, the best way to find out which style is right for you is to try them both!
